Plant Trends for 2017 by The Joy of Plants

Urban Jungle Bloggers: Plant Trends 2017

With Pantone choosing “GREENERY” as the Colour of the Year 2017 we simply know that 2017 will be a very green year. But what are the new plant trends? How will we use plants in our homes this year? The Joy of Plants (by the Dutch Flower Council) defined 4 different style trends based upon the current era: Harmonise, Energise, Equalise and Rebel. They recently presented these four styles in the beautiful La Villa Rose in Paris and of course we were there to see what these trends look like, what they mean and what they consist of. From cosy and collected, to mix & match and from energetic to colourful: there is something for every plant lover. Which one is your favourite plant style trend?

Harmonise
Misleading experiences mean that the need for truth and trust is greater than ever. As a result, fact checking has become a popular pastime – we want to have certainty about the world. Sensory perception therefore becomes incredibly important. This is expressed in personal rituals that see us recharging from nature. Places where we can retreat and feel nature around us are important. We surround ourselves with flowers and plants which fulfil a symbolic role. Natural, round shapes allow us to find peace. Natural patterns and designs derived from flowers and plants typify this trend. Green is at the heart of the colour palette, alongside calm colours such as pale yellow and pink and lilac accents.

Equalize
The imbalance in the world makes it clear that standards need to be adjusted in order to restore equilibrium. Amidst all the violence we have lost sight of the human scale which provides understanding and connection. As a counter-reaction, we close ourselves off from the bigger picture and focus on something small and tangible. In and around the home, small flowers and plants are placed on a pedestal and are given equal status with all other products. In the garden this is expressed in an alternation of living greenery and dead materials. The combination of various unusual materials and a mixture of romantic and bright colours create a new harmony. Both feminine floral patterns and masculine minimalist patterns with small checks and stripes are important.

Energise
We are preparing ourselves for a fresh move forward following the economic crisis. The energy is tangible. Being fit and radiating energy is the new creed. Personal data becomes a new means of payment, and that creates a new zest for life – we want to be seen as energetic and innovative. As a result, plants and flowers are increasingly seen as the ultimate source of oxygen, and thus the source of energy and vitality. Everything projects a winners’ mentality with which we show that we can take on the world and enter the new era fit and active. We create a simultaneously relaxed and active space by combining fresh, powerful and functional together. This is reflected in powerful, stark flower and leaf shapes in eye-catching colours. The focus is on energetic colours combined with a paler or faded tone. The stark, geometric materials and patterns feature sports references such as stripes, dots and honeycomb structures.

Rebel
In times of rising tension and stress, we need to find a release. In order to survive, it’s imperative that we put things in perspective and take a light-hearted view of serious matters. There’s a need to soften the existing situation. In response to this, an atmosphere is created in which there appear to be no rules, but instead colour, cheerfulness and silliness. Flowers and plants are ideal for meeting this need by using unexpected colour combinations and shapes. Convention is thrown to the wind and we get the chance to adopt a contemporary, unique angle. Anything’s possible – everything’s allowed!

So you will find oak, walnut and wenge wood elements, a cork sphere as well as a merino wool felt sphere combined with a textile cable and an incandescent light bulb. The colours are natural and green hues with a mint element to recall the Urban Jungle Bloggers logo of course:-)urbanjunglebloggers, UJB lamp, HaengThis UJB Pendant emits a warm and cosy glow and is wonderful when matched with your beloved houspelants. Whether you hang it from the ceiling, lay it on the floor or on a shelf, or else you fix it on a bar – the choices are as manifold as the design options for the HAENG lamps. We love this inclusive design process which enables you to customize the lamp of your choice to meet your style and likings.

Here are the interpretations of plants and light by our Urban Jungle Bloggers community. Get inspired, enjoy, and happy festive season!

Shopping for plant accessories can sometimes be a difficult task. If you are looking for something more individual, something vintage, something designy you might realize that the local garden center and some small plant shops do not have what you are looking for. We also often get asked where we find our plant pots, home decor items and more. And the answer is quite often the same: Etsy. And to celebrate Etsy’s latest campaign #EtsyMeetsNL where Dutch creatives are in the focus, we have teamed up with them and we are sharing our favorite Etsy shops from the Netherlands and beyond. Of course most of them are suited for real plant lovers like us!

Etsy is a perfect source for design shopping whatever your taste and interior style is – from vintage to contemporary and modern. Judith’s home brims with strong and vibrant colours and is infused with a vibrant mix of modern and retro design objects. Plants thrive in the light-filled French home and so it was clear that Judith scored some amazing pieces that complement her style. Her favourite finds include a series of ceramic plant pots from Barcelona based Maevo Studio and Jenni Oh Crafts from Rome.

Did you know you can even buy real plants on Etsy? Of course shipping is regulated in certain countries, but you can find some fine cacti and succulents in the French Etsy shop of The Cactus Corner Shop. The Euphobia lacta cristata, Euphorbia inermis and the Opuntia zebrina are cute and healthy and a welcome addition to Judith’s plantgang:

Below you can see some speckled details of the Maevo Studio plant pot in the back and a succulent pot from Green Monsters in the front. The pots from their Palm Springs collection come with a matching draining tray with a hint of color in Aurora, Dune or Mint. They’re very pretty and practical at the same time.

Our eyes are always peeled for products with a botanical vibe, like this fantastic L’Ambitieux mobile from French brand VOLTA Paris. The shape of the blades of this decorative hanging mobile is inspired by Eucalyptus petals! It’s mesmerizing to look at and adds a botanical touch to a room without adding any plants. All VOLTA Paris mobiles are made by hand in Paris from recycled French materials.

Igor’s home on the other hand is a collected home with a distinct vintage vibe and bohemian atmosphere. Mid-century design classic live side-by-side with collected pieces, souvenirs from his many travels, handmade ceramics, ethnic textiles and lush plants. Scoring vintage items on Etsy was Igor’s quest. For his plants he opted for vintage plant pots found at the Dutch Etsy shop ‘House of C’. This shops features one-of-a-kind vintage objects as well as handmade items from around the world. Additionally to the plant pots Igor opted for a woven basket from Zimbabwe and a vintage wooden fruit bowl.

Not necessarily plant related, but Igor also found a vintage Moroccan pouf from Fez in the Etsy shop ‘Essence of Morocco’. A perfect accomplishment to the vintage plant pots and the kilim rug and other ethnic home textiles in his home. Coziness is the key word in this home!

So next time you wonder where Judith or Igor have their unique plant items from (as well as other home accessories), the answer might well be Etsy!

A plantshelfie with the FENCY from Tolhuijs

Urban Jungle Bloggers - Fency Tolhuijs plantshelfie

It’s one of our favorite plant styling ideas: the plantshelfie. The plantshelfie is a real Urban Jungle Bloggers classic and has been the monthly topic not once, but even twice before. Bloggers from all over the world joined in and styled their shelfie with plants in their own specific way. From a simple ledge, to a String shelfie or a bookcase: the fun of a nice plantshelfie lays in the unlimited styling opportunities. Personal photos, travel souvenirs, art, trinkets, sculptures, gems, decor objects… and at least one plant.

Urban Jungle Bloggers - Fency Tolhuijs plantshelfie

Recently we were approached by Tolhuijs Design because they wanted to introduce us to their latest design: the FENCY. Before watching into the details, we thought: plantshelfie! But the FENCY is more than just a shelf system:  it is a design object with a story: all materials from the grid structure and the wooden shelves are so called: waste upgrading. The grid structure is made of sturdy festival fences. They are upcycled: cleaned, stripped, cut into the right dimensions, polished and powder coated in white, black or a beautiful mint green Urban Jungle Bloggers colour. All of this work isn’t done by regular carpenters but by people in prisons and social work places. Working helps to give these people a purpose and responsibility in their daily lives which contributes to a better society. FENCY is social responsible!

Urban Jungle Bloggers - Fency Tolhuijs plantshelfie

The wooden shelves of the FENCY are made from pressed wooden pallets and can be attached to the grid with 2 simple hooks. These allow you to place them exactly where you like them: on top, a bit more to the left or to the right. Very versatile and so much fun to play around with! And if your plants (or your collection of props) grow bigger, simply adjust the position of the shelves.

Urban Jungle Bloggers - Fency Tolhuijs plantshelfie

Another cool idea would be to use parts of the FENCY as a trellis for crawling or climbing plants, like Devil’s ivy (pothos), Hedera (ivy), and Passiflora.

Urban Jungle Bloggers - Fency Tolhuijs plantshelfie

The FENCY comes in different shapes and sizes: it is a cool wall structure to organize kitchen utensils or to keep your work tools at hand in the home office. Use it to display your favorite clothes in your bedroom or artwork in the living room. We couldn’t help ourselves and turned it into a plant display and included our Urban Jungle book:

Urban Jungle Bloggers - Fency Tolhuijs plantshelfie

Single, double, triple or quatro shelves from pressed wooden pallets can be used to display a group or one singular plant, like the Aloë below:

We have a little bonus for you, if you wish to order your own FENCY: until December 19th 2016 you get 25% off if you use the code “urbanjungleblog”. Go ahead, get yourself a FENCY and happy plant styling!
