Urban Jungle rooftop dinner in Berlin

Urban Jungle Bloggers Rooftop dinner Berlin plant styling

Today we’re happy to share part II of the Jungle Styling project we worked on in Berlin last month. As you saw in part I we created a lush jungle hangout for 30 fashion influencers that were invited to attend the Bread and Butter show by Zalando. But brunch alone is not enough, right?! We also worked on a fantastic rooftop location and turned it into a planty setting for the Saturday night dinner.

A wooden “house” structure was the base of the design, to which we attached plant hangers from fabric yarn, that we created following the DIY in the #urbanjunglebook. It was bright and sunny in Berlin when we set up the rooftop dinner, but there was so much wind that we had to cancel all the beautiful candles and Eno studio candle holders that we planned to use. No candles, but lots of greens, terracotta pots and pops of yellow made for a fun rooftop dinner location.

Together with the talented ladies from 79 Berlin, we styled the table top with ceramic plates and hand-stamped napkins with botanical patterns, presented on large Monstera deliciosa leaves used as natural placemats. We used Green Dots by Living Things as a “botanical table runner”: these small terracotta bowls are perfect for small grasses or crass, but also look really nice with different Echeveria succulents. They tumbled in the wind!

The guests enjoyed a nice dinner with a star barbecue master, cocktails and a private DJ . And a beautiful sunset over the German capital from the rooftop terrace. Ohhh the hard life of a fashion influencer 😉

Houseplant of the Month

Houseplant of the Month October: Aglaonema

Houseplant of the month: Anglaonema

The sun is setting earlier, the days are getting crisp and the first veils of morning fog are covering the landscape: Clearly autumn has set in on the northern hemisphere. It is the time when we have to move our plants indoors and prepare them and ourselves for the change of season. But with our houseplants even a grey autumn day feels like a lush day in a jungle. And even more so if you have the “Houseplant of the month October’ in your home – the Chinese Evergreen or Aglaonema. Its beautiful leaf markings feature a fresh array of green and silver shades, yellows or even red glows.

Houseplant of the month: Anglaonema

The Aglaonema is perfect for a playful home with patterns due to its richly patterned foliage – combined with wall art and postcards (like the lovely postcards by Paruspaper as seen above or the DIY banner by Sister Mag) you can emphasise the patterns and colours while simultaneously calming the scene with neutral or monochromatic accessories like the simple ceramic vase Lily by Louisa KĂśber for Designerbox or the Butler watering can by Xala. Pattern, colours and neutrals make a great combination for the Aglaonema in any home. However, Chinese Evergreens make a good figure with wood, wicker or varnished materials too – get creative and find the right balance between patterns, textures and colours for your home!

Houseplant of the month: Anglaonema

For a livelier styling opt for a variety of Aglaonemas in different sizes and combine them with geometrical planters in vivid reds, blues, yellows and greens for a contemporary twist of the 1980s Memphis style. Or enjoy the lush and peaceful foliage with neutral planters or woven baskets – whatever you prefer or whatever fits your interior styling, the Chinese Evergreen is a good and patient green fellow to enrich your own urban jungle. But where does this beauty come from? And how to care for it? Let us elaborate on that below!

Houseplant of the month: Anglaonema

In the wild Chinese Evergreen grows in the subtropical rainforests of Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia, where the plant thrives under the canopy of larger trees and bushes, which means that the sun can hardly reach them (think of that fact for the optimal light condition indoors). The plant is a member of the Araceae family, also known as the arum family just like the Peace lily, the Diffenbachia or the Anthurium for example. Chinese Evergreen have variegated leaves and generally remain fairly small so do not wonder if it does not grow too high – it rather gets bushy. Alongside the fabulous foliage, this plant’s greatest strength is that it is very easy to maintain compared to other green plants. The Aglaonema is forgiving and tolerates forgetful waterers and will not easily disappoint. That makes it a fabulous houseplant for all newbies or those looking for green roommates with minimum care requirements.

Houseplant of the month: Anglaonema

As heard before, due to its natural habitat this plant prefers semi-shade or even full shade in your home. Perfect for those darker corners at home, right!? However, the plant should get at least some natural light as it won’t thrive under artificial light alone. Irregular watering is fine, you can keep the soil moist or it can even dry out every now and then. Just don’t let it sit in too soggy soil. Misting the leaves from time to time will keep them shiny and healthy as well as dusting – it will keep the leaves’ pores unclogged and the plant will breathe better. Thus it will be most beneficial for your home’s indoor climate. The Chinese Evergreen also grows some small but rather unspectacular flowers that grow on a spike surrounded by a bract. The plant puts lots of energy in the production of those flowers but you can also just snip them off and thus divert the energy into the production of leaves. Up to you!  As usual here is our little plant care chart to help you keep your Chinese Evergreen healthy and happy!

Zalando Summer House jungle styling in Berlin

Urban Jungle Bloggers Zalando Summer House Berlin plant styling

A week before we launched our Urban Jungle book in Munich, Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam, we worked on another exciting project: the styling of the Zalando Summer House in Berlin. Online fashion retailer Zalando, invited 30 fashion and lifestyle influencers to the German capital for the Bread & Butter Show, which after years of being a tradeshow for professionals-only is now open to everyone, and includes concerts, fashion shows and lots of good food. These thirty fashionistas and fashion-loving guys stayed in the brand new Amano Hotel and had access to their own private hangout in the soon-to-open Rose Garden cafĂŠ restaurant with a brunch room and a pop-up showroom by Zalando. Our task was to to transform this very raw and urban space into a lush jungle. No biggie!

The entire Zalando Summer House identity was all about color-blocking with lots of yellow, blue and green. We opted for easy DIY plant hangers made from fabric yarn that we hung from the ceiling for an instant jungle vibe. The DIY instructions of these hangers can be found in our Urban Jungle book; one T-shirt is enough to create at least one plant hanger.

When looking for beautiful plant pots for the project, we immediately thought of the fun tumbling pots by Living Things, called voltasol. These are handmade terracotta pots from Spain and have a semi-conical base that avoids the static nature of conventional pots. The Voltasol pots are playful and “tumble” and come with different colored rims, that fitted right in:

The Rose Garden proposed a menu of fresh and healthy food and delicious Rose Garden cocktails. It tasted great and looked even better!

We ordered over 300 plants to create a lush urban jungle feeling and choose different kinds of ferns, ivy, palms, Monstera deliciosa, Zamioculcas, aloe plants, succulents, banana trees and ficus trees. A pretty cosy hangout, don’t you think:

We not only decorated the lounge area, we also added mini urban jungles to the 30 hotel rooms at Amano Hotel. Each hotel room was fully personalized with name-pillows, frames, outfits, goodies and a cute Voltasol mini pot to take home.

Urban Jungle Book Launch in Berlin

Urban Jungle book launch in Berlin with Urbanara

After the beautiful and heartwarming #urbanjunglebook launch in Munich’s botanical garden, we have launched our book last Thursday in the brand new Urbanara showroom in Berlin. We were delighted to present our book to a very hip and cool Berlin crowd comprised of friends, bloggers, journalists and other creative folk. Luckily, one of our dear friends and super blogger Jules Villbrandt of Herz & Blut was willing to take some pictures so that we can share the very warm summer evening (despite it being in mid September) with all of you.

Berlin was really good to us! The weather was glorious with sun and summer temperatures and the Urbanara showroom was packed with wonderful and positive people – ranging from just born babies to happy families and creative individuals. We were very happy to meet some good old friends as well as meet many new ones. At 6 p.m. we started our presentation after a short intro by the Urbanara founder Claire Davidson, as well as Christian Tesch from our publisher Callwey. Then it was our turn: We talked about the beginnings of the Urban Jungle Bloggers community, the idea for the book and the entire book creation process. We shared some anecdotes and behind-the-scenes moments and at the end all attending people had the opportunity to peek into their own book.

Later it was all about fun and relaxed chats with good food and drinks. We signed quite a few copies and had a great time catching up with the lovely people. The entire Urbanara team in Berlin made an extra effort to make this evening special: The showroom was beautifully decorated with plants, and outdoors lounge area invited the people to enjoy the balmy temperatures, yummy food and good wine was served to keep the spirits high. Thanks again for everything – to both the Urbanara team (especially to Anna-Marie and Nina) and to our publisher Callwey

Last but not least thanks to the more than 60 guests (many of who came in adequate botanical fashion) who joined our Urban Jungle book launch in Berlin. It was thanks to each and everyone of them that our evening was such a beautiful and unforgettable experience. And now we hope you will all enjoy some quiet and inspiring moments with our new Urban Jungle book! Happy reading!

Urban Jungle Book Launch in Munich

Urban Jungle bookUrban Jungle bookFinally day X has come: Last Friday we have launched the Urban Jungle book in Munich’s botanical garden. What a wonderful day it was! Not only were we both full with happiness and green love, but we finally had the chance to show our books to a wonderful audience comprised of journalists, bloggers, home owners and partners. Both books, the English Urban Jungle book as well as the German version “Wohnen in GrĂźn” were available for a first peek to the audience: For the first time they had the opportunity to peek into the book and discover the five home stories, the plant portraits and the numerous plant styling and DIY ideas.

Urban Jungle book Urban Jungle book Urban Jungle book Urban Jungle bookWe were honored to have many friends and dear people in the audience, too. One of the home owners joined us too – Fem flew in from Istanbul and made our day even more special. We also had many contributing bloggers in the audience as well as our partners and our talented friend and photographer Lina Skukauske who took these amazing photos and captured the fun day for all of us. The day was glorious in one word: The weather was amazing and the location, the botanical garden in Munich, a divine green backdrop for the book’s presentation.

Urban Jungle book Urban Jungle book Urban Jungle book Urban Jungle bookWe decorated the room with handmade macrame plant hangers by Judith (the DIY is in the book) and guided the audience through the book with some very fun behind-the-scenes shots too. Our presentation was rounded up with green goodie bags for all attendees and a very informative and inspiring (yet super hot) guided tour through the cacti and succulent collection of the botanical garden. The tour included even the growing greenhouses that are not accessible to the public. After the full-force green input we all had a relaxed lunch in the botanical garden’s restaurant.

Urban Jungle book Urban Jungle book Urban Jungle book Urban Jungle book Urban Jungle bookAfter our presentation the attendees enjoyed more fun and information: A fabulous trend presentation by Gudy Herder about spring/summer trends for 2017 as well as a floral styling workshop with Anastasia Benko. We want to thank the team of Callwey for this magnificent day, especially Laura from the PR team who took care of every detail and made the day extra special to all of us. Thanks also to the botanical garden for being a fantastic host and opening their doors to all of us. And thanks to all who came to make the day special with us. We are so grateful and happy!
